Progress & Attendance
It is a strict visa condition that students maintain satisfactory course progress and attendance for the duration of their course of study. (Visa Condition 8202)
Course progress will be monitored at the completion of each semester, and a formal report will be sent home to parents. To demonstrate satisfactory course progress, students need to achieve competency (C standard) in at least 50 per cent of the subjects studied.
If a student does not achieve this level of competency, the Tutor/Dean will meet with the student to develop an intervention strategy for academic improvement. This may involve additional tutoring, more supervised study periods or other strategies as deemed appropriate. Progress will be monitored and parents informed over the following semester.
If the student fails to achieve satisfactory course progress by the end of the following semester, the school will advise the student in writing of its intention to report the student for breach of visa condition 8202. The student has 20 working days to access the school’s internal complaints and appeals process, to avoid being reported to DEEWR via PRISMS.
Attendance is recorded daily, and students are required to provide legitimate reasons (see below)* for any absence from school (including late arrival or early departure on any school day). Satisfactory attendance (for visa purposes) is 80% of scheduled school days.
Checks will be conducted at the end of each five week period (mid-term and end of each term) to ensure that students are maintaining satisfactory attendance records. Students at risk of breaching the attendance requirements will be counselled and offered support in the first instance. If the student passes the attendance threshold (more than 20 per cent days absent in a semester), the school will advise the student in writing of its intention to report the student for breach of visa condition 8202. The student has 20 working days to access the school’s internal complaints and appeals process, to avoid being reported to DEEWR via PRISMS.
*Legitimate reasons include, but are not limited to: serious illness (doctor’s certificate is required); bereavement; major political upheaval or natural disaster; a traumatic experience; visa delays.
