Year 12 Cathedral student, Thomas Braithwaite is one of 16 students from around the state to be selected to represent Queensland in the Australian School Sport Tennis Championships (Pizzey Cup) to be held in Shepparton, Victoria at the end of this month.
The 17 year old boarder from Mount Isa was the only player from the Northern Region to make the state team after selection at the Queensland School Sport Secondary State Tennis Championships held in Townsville in March.
Thomas has worked very hard to make the team, especially since coming from western Queensland has restricted his playing availability. However since moving to Townsville last year to attend boarding school this has made access to the sport much easier.
Thomas said he is looking forward to competing at the National Championships “It’ll be great to be up against people I haven’t played before and possibly play different styles of tennis.”
“It would be great if I made the Australian team after this championship but I’ll just see how I go as it’s the first time I’ve made the state team” added Thomas.
Thomas trains under the expertise of coaches, Brad Clews and Taylor Douglas three times a week at the Western Suburbs Tennis Club in Heatley and is very thankful for his coaches teaching and guidance.
After finishing school at the end of the year Thomas hopes to stay in Townsville to work and further his tennis career.
