Students win state Arts (Drama) competition Featured

Two students, Harlee Timms (Year 12) and Megan Heferen (Year 11) from The Cathedral School have recently returned from Brisbane after winning the Duologue section of the Queensland Youth Shake Fest Competition held at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts earlier this month.

Shake Fest organised by Shake & Stir Theatre Company, in its fifth year, has provided a unique opportunity for students across Queensland to focus their artistic abilities in an all-inclusive creative competition celebrating the works of William Shakespeare. Shake Fest is the original cross schools Festival connecting students' schools with a professional arts organisation.

Over 5,000 students entered the completion across the state, with 171 students representing their region at the state finals held in September. The duo performed an excerpt from the Shakespearean comedy Much Ado About Nothing to win their category topping other duos from Coomera Anglican College and Nudgee College.

Year 11 student Megan Heferen said “It was an amazing opportunity to be involved with.”

“As well as the competition, we got to experience workshops such as Physical Theatre which really develops your acting skills” continued Megan.

Year 12 student Harlee Timms said “It was exciting to be around so many talented people from across the state and all the Shake & Stir Theatre Company staff and judges were so encouraging and gave us some really valuable feedback.”

Harlee and Megan are now waiting to find out if they make it through to the small group of competitors that will have the opportunity to perform a Shakespeare classic in Brisbane in January 2018.

Both students will also continue to be involved in local theatre companies such as Theatre iNQ and Props Full Throttle. Harlee is also in the process of auditioning for a number of Arts Education and Training Institutes around the country including NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) and WAAPA (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts).
